Congratulations!

“The Outstanding NPPA Student Chapter this year is the student organization at Southern Illinois University-Carbondale. The students rallied to document a tornado that went through their region and produced a book called “4:56 a.m. The Story of the February 29, 2012 Tornado.” Their book raised nearly $20,000 which the students elected to give back to the storm-damaged community. ” -NPPA.org

SIU NPPA Hosts Fundraiser

fundraiser

SIU NPPA hosted our first fundraiser of the new year on Monday! We deposited our earnings into our RSO account and plan to host a fundraising ‘lunch table’ every 2 weeks in the communications building. We had a great turnout and strong reaction to our hot dogs and cake pops! We’re hoping to build up our account to cover costs for our trip to Northwestern for the IPPA Midwest Summit and other trips we plan on taking as a group.

Congratulations to SIU NPPA and the SIUC Photojournalism department for being featured on The Visual Student for their work on 4:56 A.M. The Story of The February 29, 2012 Tornado.

Bettina Hansen wrote a fantastic article telling the story of how our SIU photo students approached the natural disaster. The article features insight from former student Steve Matzker, Assistant Professor Mark Dolan, and current student Danielle McGrew.

Our first workshop of the year was focused on strobes. Our very own Mark Dolan lead the workshop where we learned how to operate both Nikon and Canon strobes.

We learned about basic function including front and rear-curtain sync, how to bounce light, and slave mode – as well as working strobes with a slow shutter speed.

We finished the night with a field trip at the local Dairy Queen where we practiced photographing neon!
